Buzz Off! Your Go-To Hornet and Wasp Nest Removal in North London
Got an unwelcome buzz around your home or garden? You’re not alone! In North London, the buzz is real, especially during the warmer months. Hornets and wasps don’t just bring the nuisance; they pack a sting that’s both literal and figurative.
But fear not, because we’re here to turn your buzz troubles into a tale of the past.
Why the Buzz?
Did you know that in the peak of summer, it’s estimated that hornet and wasp populations can soar into the thousands in areas like ours?
These winged warriors are not just looking for a spot to sunbathe; they’re on the hunt for their next home, and your property could be on their list!
If you see a large number of wasps in and around your home, garden or office, there’s probably a wasp’s nest nearby. Queen wasps emerge from hibernation in the Spring and start working on a new nest, which is made from chewed wood and saliva. She is joined by hundreds of “worker” wasps who continue to build the wasp nest and by the Summer, 300 eggs can be produced daily with up to 5,000 adults feeding grubs and maintaining the wasp nest.
A Wasp Nest Removal Story to Tell
Take Lucy from Palmer’s Green, for example. One sunny afternoon, she discovered a wasp nest the size of a football in her loft.
With a young family and a serious allergy to wasp stings in the mix, the situation was more than just a nuisance—it was a health hazard.
Lucy called in the experts, and in no time, the nest was safely removed, and peace was restored to her family home.
When it comes to wasps and hornets, our priority is to destroy an active nest giving you peace of mind again. While at times it may not always be possible to physically remove the the nest, we will ensure that no wasps or hornets return to that nest post treatment.

Wasps and Hornets in the UK
WASPS in the UK are mainly classed as Common wasps (Vespula vulgaris) or German wasps (Vespula germanica).
These two species are almost identical, but you can tell them apart by their facial and thorax markings. The Common wasp generally has an ‘anchor’ shaped black marking on the front of their face, while the German wasp have either an incomplete version of this, or three distinctive black dots on yellow.
Both are yellow and black striped and are known for their painful stings which can cause allergic and sometimes dangerous reactions. Often seen as aggressive, the wasp will only attack when threatened but it tends to emit a distress pheromone which can make other members of its colony highly defensive and more prone to sting, especially if the nest is seen to be under threat. Comparatively the German wasp is one of the more aggressive species in the UK. Both are capable of multiple stings.
HORNETS in the UK - The European Hornet (Vespa crabro) is almost twice the size of the Common wasp and German wasp. Although they are less aggressive than wasps, they may still sting you repeatedly to defend their nest against any threat.
In both instances Wasp and Hornet stings can include a sharp pain or burning at the sting site. Redness, swelling, and itching can occur as well. In extreme cases anaphylaxis (an extreme reaction to the toxins in the wasp’s venom) can occur. Without rapid medical attention, it can result in death within a short time.
Size and Appearance of Wasps and Hornets
- Wasp - The Common Wasp and German Wasp is between 10-20mm long , with typical black and yellow stripes.
- Hornet - The European Hornet is between 19-35mm in length, banded in yellow and brown.
Nesting Habits
- Wasp - Nests are usually formed in roof spaces, sheds, soil banks, wall cavities and trees. A ball-like shape, usually a little uneven – especially in larger nests. A grey /brown colour, commonly quite drab and faded, made from a papery substance created by chewing wood mixed with saliva.
- Hornets - build large, enclosed nests that are often shaped like a teardrop and made from a papery substance created by chewing wood mixed with saliva. These nests can be found in trees, shrubs, or high places like attics or the eaves of buildings.
Signs of a Wasp's Nest
- Swarms - Wasps tend to travel to and from the nest , several times a day to gather food before returning. Following the flight path of the wasps can help you to locate the nest. Common routes are usually areas beneath roof tiles, air bricks or loft eaves.
- A buzzing noise - you may not always see it, but a loud buzzing noise behind the wall, ceiling or loft may mean a hidden wasp nest.
- A sting - In the summer months, builders, roofers and window cleaners often receive stings working at heights in and around properties. This is usually a strong indication that a nest is in close proximity.
- Visible nest - Wasp’s nests are usually a dull grey or brown and they resemble a papery balloon or ball. They often have a swirl pattern on the outside.
- Ongoing activity - It's not uncommon to find more than one wasp nest in a property, and it should never be assumed that it is just the one.
-
Harvesting - Seeing a lot of wasps harvesting wood from your garden furniture and fence panels is a sure sign there's a wasp nest close by, as they don't like to travel further than they need to for nest building materials.
Behavior and Aggression
- Wasp - The German Wasp has a shorter temper compared to the Common Wasp when provoked, especially near their nests. They are known to sting multiple times, and their stings can be quite painful.
- Hornets - The European Hornet, despite its fearsome-look and size, it is actually much less aggressive than the wasp.
Role in Ecosystem
Both wasps and hornets play crucial roles in the ecosystem, including pollination and controlling pest populations by preying on other insects. However, their methods and the extent to which they interact with humans can differ based on their species-specific behaviours and habitats.

Why Control Wasps and Hornets?
There are a few issues to consider if you discover a wasp nest:
- Wasp and hornet stings are painful and can be fatal. For people who are allergic to wasp stings, anaphylactic shock can occur and this is a life-threatening reaction.
- If you run a business and customers are bombarded by wasps or hornets they are likely to complain or even worse, stop visiting you.
- You have a duty to protect your customers and staff as well as minimising the disruption to your business.
- Wasps should only be treated if they pose a risk to public health and safety.
- The earlier you treat a wasp or hornet nest, the less aggressive the colony is going to be.
- Wasps and hornets do not die after one sting – they can sting you multiple times! Remember that when they feel threatened, wasps can become aggressive very quickly.
